1 Dollar. 1948. ICCS graded Superb Gem Uncirculated-66. Upon the arrival of the master tools for the new, redesigned obverse, minting of the 1947 Maple Leaf coins was ceased and regular strikings began. The brief production run of dollars that followed yielded a scant 18,780 pieces, which in time would prove to be the official lowest mintage for the denomination.

Desired by all but obtained by few, the 1948 silver dollar remains a cornerstone of every serious collection of Canadian coins, and none more so than this ultimate example, the solo finest mint-state example in the ICCS census. A singularly immaculate and alluring coin; the pristine fields are unmistakably mirrored, but careful observation will also reveal a trace of light cartwheel lustre on the obverse. A touch of mint frost on the hair lends the bust a cameo appearance, while a few wisps of straw-gold toning are all but indistinguishable from the otherwise brilliant surfaces.

The ICCS census lists only a single coin graded as MS-66, while PCGS has graded only two examples in an equivalent grade. Spirited bidding is to be expected on this colossal rarity.
